Last month, as part of our partnership with Design Core Detroit and our support of Detroit Month of Design, the Gilbert Family Foundation was once again proud to be the lead sponsor Eastern Market After Dark (EMAD). This vibrant event showcases the creativity and spirit of Detroit. “Eastern Market has long been a central part of Detroit’s identity, known for its fresh food markets and entrepreneurial spirit,” said Kiana Wenzell, Co-Executive Director of Design Core Detroit. “During EMAD, the market is reimagined as a nighttime destination for artists and designers, symbolizing Detroit’s ongoing urban revitalization and adaptive reuse of historic spaces. EMAD creates a unique space where artists, designers, and the general public can connect.” EMAD is always free to attend, allowing individuals from all walks of life to come together in celebration of creativity and community.
A Night to Shine
EMAD 2024 transformed Eastern Market into a bustling hub of art, music, and connection. “The open and accessible format fosters a sense of community, encouraging collaboration between Detroit’s creative professionals and residents. This interaction strengthens Detroit’s identity as a city where art and innovation are both celebrated and accessible,” said Wenzell. From captivating art installations to electrifying live performances, the event featured a diverse lineup that highlighted the incredible talent of local artists. Families and friends gathered to experience the magic of our city’s creative scene, enjoying everything from interactive exhibits to delicious food from local vendors. “EMAD shines a spotlight on local artists, makers, small businesses and nonprofits,” Wenzell stated. “From pop-up shops to art installations, it’s a platform for Detroit’s homegrown talent to share their work with a broader audience. This creates a direct link between the city’s design heritage and its current creative landscape.”

Our Partnership with Design Core Detroit
Our longstanding partnership with Design Core Detroit played a crucial role in making EMAD 2024 a success. As advocates for design-driven innovation, Design Core Detroit aligns seamlessly with our mission at the Gilbert Family Foundation: to create access to the arts for all Detroiters. Together, we strive to elevate local artists and increase access to the arts for residents, because we believe that art should be accessible to everyone. “Eastern Market After Dark is a special event because it brings together people from across generations, neighborhoods and identities to celebrate the cultural and creative vibrancy of our city,” said Akua Hill, Director of Arts and Culture at the Gilbert Family Foundation. “For this one night, Eastern Market transforms into a unique night market, thoughtfully activated by community organizations, artists of all mediums, small business vendors, and a range of interactive experiences.” This inclusive approach not only fosters a sense of belonging but also inspires the next generation of artists and creators. “The intersection of industries represented at EMAD, all woven together by Detroit pride is what makes it an event that so many continue to look forward to year after year,” Hill said. Wenzell agreed. “The open and accessible format fosters a sense of community, encouraging collaboration between Detroit’s creative professionals and residents. This interaction strengthens Detroit’s identity as a city where art and innovation are both celebrated and accessible.
Through our support of EMAD, we’re not only celebrating Detroit Month of Design but also helping foster an environment where creativity thrives. Together with DesignCore, we have a shared goal to connect designers and artists with the community to experience and engage with the arts. Our support for events like this reflects our dedication to removing barriers to artistic participation. Alongside our partners, we will continue to celebrate and uplift the incredible creativity that defines our city!
