Too many Detroit families are one unexpected expense away from financial crisis. A new partnership between Communities First, Inc. and the Gilbert Family Foundation is working to change that by providing the tools and coaching to build lasting financial security.
Gilbert Family Foundation recently committed $500,000 over the next two years to Communities First, Inc. to expand the organization’s Family Mobility Savings Program (FMSP). With Gilbert Family Foundation’s support, the program will serve up to 100 Detroit residents with personalized financial coaching and incentives to help build emergency savings – all at no cost.
“Families who join this program are doing more than opening a savings account – they’re building confidence, good financial habits, and long-term stability,” said Glenn Wilson, President and CEO of Communities First, Inc. “It’s not just about earning incentives. It’s about transforming how people think about money and helping them create a stronger foundation for the future.”
Launched in 2023, FMSP helps participants strengthen their relationship with budgeting, saving, and long-term planning. Each participant is paired with a trained Family Mobility Coach who offers one-on-one guidance and wraparound support to identify goals, address obstacles, and stay accountable.
In addition to coaching, participants receive assistance with essential needs that often stand in the way of progress, including transportation, professional development, or replacing vital documents like birth certificates. Participants who meet key milestones can earn up to $1,000 toward a qualifying savings account.
“Our mission with this program is to help families not just survive, but thrive” said Essence Wilson, Chief Strategy Officer at Communities First, Inc. “With the right tools and support, Detroiters can take control of their financial futures and build generational wealth.”
The Gilbert Family Foundation is proud to support the expansion of the Family Mobility Savings Program as part of our broader commitment to increasing economic mobility for Detroit residents.
“Financial stability doesn’t happen overnight, but it starts with access – to trusted coaching, reliable banking, and real-time assistance” said Linda Nosegbe, Director, Economic Mobility at Gilbert Family Foundation. “The Family Mobility Savings Program meets Detroiters where they are and provides the structure and support to move toward long-term stability and wealth.”
The expansion of FMSP is also made possible through collaboration with First Independence Bank, one of Michigan’s few community-focused, mission-driven financial institutions headquartered in Detroit. As the program’s financial partner, the bank will help participants access trustworthy, culturally competent banking services designed to support their financial growth.
Additional supporters include Comerica Charitable Trust of Michigan and Chase Bank, whose investments are helping strengthen Detroit’s financial ecosystem.
Rolling enrollment for the next Family Mobility Savings Program cohort begins this fall, with the first group launching November 1, 2025. Participation is free for qualifying Detroit residents aged 18 and older who are ready to take the next step toward financial stability.
